General Lips

The place to discuss things about the Flaming Lips that aren't to do with live shows or Christmas on Mars...

the broken double-neck

so, anyone who's seen the Lips live in the past 2 years has probably noticed their red double-neck guitar with the lower neck broken off. I remember sometime last year it had been replaced with a Guitar Hero neck, but that too has disappeared. Well, considering a single-necked double-neck guitar is only using half its potential, I've come up with several suggestions for replacing the neck in no particular order.

1) Flame Thrower; because I'm sure I'm not the only one here who would like to see pyrotechnics return to the Flaming Lips stage show. I mean, Michael's hair is already gone, so it can't burn off again.

2) Midi-controller; I got this idea when I saw the Guitar Hero neck on there and wondered if it was wired to anything. No? Well, it'd be a lot cooler if it did.

3) Roman Candle; along the same lines as number 1, more pyrotechnics!

4) Streamer Tube; Why is Wayne the only one who gets to launch those things at the audience? Steven, get in on that action!

5) Another Guitar; this seems obvious, but it's worth adding to the list.

6) A Theremin; I've actually seen these attached to guitars before. It's weird, it's cool, and those are pretty much all the criteria The Flaming Lips need.

7) A Stomp Pedal; It's a lot more convenient to twiddle those knobs when they right there on the guitar!

8) A Fish; I don't know, I'm making these up on the fly now.

Any other good ideas? Hopefully Kliph reads this and passes it on.

I'm personally enjoying the irony of a mute Wayne.

Pittsburgh show

I am new here, so hopefully this is going in the correct spot!

Just curious if anyone out there was one of the other dancers on stage for July 20th show?
Any other awesome Wayne stories?

Since he was born in Pittsburgh, he told me that I didn't sound like I was from the area, Since I did not say "Yinz" or talk about "chipped ham".. because that is such a casual conversation topic and all!
Then continued to say how he always felt like when his family would come back home, they felt like they were coming to a hick town. Then later realized he was coming from the hick town to visit Pittsburgh, such a down to earth conversation.

Some of the nicest people out there are Lip's fans, I was shocked! There was no pushing out in the crowd just screaming their lungs out and smiles.

DVD-A Question.

Hey guys. I know that there are DVD-A versions of at least 4 albums and I know for sure that one (embryonic) is strictly 24-bit stereo. My question is about the other three. I know they are in 5.1, but do they also have 24-bit stereo versions on them? (I don't have surround sound...Plus I really just want to hear them in 24-bit stereo...even if I had surround.) Thanks!

Coyne's "sleeping on the roof essay"?

i may have asked this before, or maybe someone else has...

when the soft bulletin was released, wayne wrote this really lovely essay about how it was so hot in the summer they would resort to sleeping on the roof and just listen to the sounds. i can't remember whether it was in a promo email i got or it was a pdf file you could download from warner bros.

anybody have the text of this somewhere...of if it was a pdf, the actual file?

thanks.

bill

Email addy?

Is there an email addy so I can send a neat photo I took over New Years to the band? Should I just post it here?

A Very Special Request

Hi,
I am writing to you with a very special request. My nephew, Nik Smith, has been a huge fan of yours for at least 8 years - maybe longer. He has received cards from you. Nik looks a lot like Wayne Coyne, even. He used to dress up like Wayne and go to the Flaming Lips concerts. He was at Voodoo Fest a couple of years ago and Wayne went right over Nik's head in the big hamster ball. Nik was so excited about that and has told the story to many people. Nik has been a musician - he played guitar and sang. Some of his favorite songs to perform were "Yoshimi" and "Do You Realize"? Nik was my nephew and we shared a house. Last Christmas, we watched "Christmas on Mars" together! I went with Nik a couple of years ago to Bonnaroo and saw you perform. Nik turned many people on to your music.
Last week, Nik was killed in a car wreck. We all miss him terribly. We had video of Nik performing "Do You Realize" and that was the last song played at his memorial service. August 6th, we are having a celebration of Nik's life and love of music. If you are performing anywhere on that night... would you please dedicate a song to Nik Smith. He was 30 years old - his birthday is August 6th. It would make my sister smile to know you are dedicating a song to her son that night as we celebrate his life here in Lake Charles, Louisiana. If you could even write something for me to give my sister - I would be so grateful. She and Nik's Dad - Valerie and Matt, have been to many of your concerts too. Nik introduced your music to them. I could even send you the video of Nik performing your music... He would love to know you had heard him sing.
I thank you for your time,
I just wanted you to know how important your music is and how much joy it brings to our lives.
Danita,
Nik's aunt.

Satellite for you

Does anyone know where there may be an MP3 version of this song to download?

Bohemian Rhapsody and Hold On videos

I've found a few low to medium quality uploads of these videos on different sites, does anyone know of sites with higher quality videos of those 2. I've never seen them before, and it would be nice to watch them without the blur and pixellation.

Golden Age piano sheet music

Does anyone have or know where to find the piano sheet music for Golden Age? I'm bad at playing by ear, and I would really love to learn this song. Thanks.

Wayne bugs Karen O to join Lips on Letterman

“I’m bugging Karen O…to see if she’ll play… David Letterman with us… she says, “duly noted’”
-Wayne Coyne to BBC 6 Music circa the last week of June 2010, posted July 13, 2010 at http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/news/20100713_flaminglips.shtml

watch the Lips last Letterman appearance (funnily enough, performing The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song) as well as some great clips of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs band and read more about Wayne's collaborations and his thoughts on Karen at http://psychexfutureheart.wordpress.com/2010/07/15/the-yeah-yeah-yeah-co...

She Don't Use Jelly - Lyrical Interpretation

Hey everyone. I was out gardening the other day, and I got thinking about the song "She Don't Use Jelly." Here's a few thoughts I had about the lyrics.

The first verse is about a girl who will make you breakfast which will consist of Vaseline on toast. Maybe this verse is saying, "Think about what you're eating" since chemcially vaseline and margarine are not that different.

The second verse is about a guy who goes to check out live music and uses magazines to blow his nose. Maybe this verse is about a guy who doesn't really see any value in reviews or what the press says, he'd rather see a band for himself and make his own judgement.

Then there is the girl who colours her hair with tangerines. Maybe this statement is that there are natural solutions around us that we often overlook?

Reading too much into this? Probably, but as Wayne said in the commentary on the VOID DVD, "Maybe my art says more about me than I realize."

I'm selling my "Waking up with a Placebo Headwound" flaming lips photobook...

Times are hard...
