Wellmont Theater NJ 5/16/13 recap
Went to see the Lips last night with really high expectations. I love the band and think the time I saw them at Terminal 5 (NYC) in 2010 was the best show I've ever been to. Last night in NJ was disappointing though. The light show was really cool and I'll say that was even better than 2010. Everything else, though, was less interesting. In comparison to 2010, there were no costumed fans dancing onstage, no space bubble, all the confetti was black, no balloons, and Wayne is sort of stranded on top of his podium instead of roaming about. The band is very static, staying in place. No giant foam laser hands, and for all the cool lighting effects, the band was largely backlit, making it impossible to see their facial expressions or anything. As venues, Wellmont and Terminal 5 are similar size, so I assume these are choices. The new album has a dark feel, but so does Embryonic (in my mind) and you can still put on a fun show. The mood was just a little darker than I expected from the festival atmosphere of 2010. I'm going to see them again tonight in Brooklyn, outdoors maybe things will seem more airy and fun.
